Born 1947, Tokyo, Japan. A contemporary photographer, well-known for his works of wasted architectural sites, Miyamoto was given spotlight for his photographs of the Kowloon Walled City series of 1993 and the demolished cityscapes after the strike of the Kobe earthquake of 1995. His interest then shifted from wasted architectural sites to wasted human beings and the homelessness epidemic in Japanese cities, where the homeless and their dwellings were featured in his photographs. The Corrugated Cardboard Houses series is one of the noted ones of his homelessness photographs. Miyamoto extends this project further, where he constructs “pin-hole houses,” which refers to and resembles the camera obscura structure. Silhouettes of himself are often contained within the photographic frame, attempting to evoke the universal yearning of refuge and shelter. Miyamoto currently lives and works in Tokyo.
