Born 1965, Osaka, Japan. While still as masters student at the Kyoto City University of Arts, Yanobe traveled to Europe to view the “masterpieces” of art, however returned disappointed; he could not relate to the western “masterpieces.” This inspired him to pursue investigations of his own culture, proposing his attraction to Japanese animation and science fiction as his starting point. It was films such as Godzilla and the catastrophic imageries contained in it that worked as an inspiration for him to experiment with producing works related to the post-atomic tradition, running in parallel with his own apocalyptic imagination of Japan. Yanobe’s Environmental Survival Suits have become a logo for him, embodying both a sense of humour, paranoia, and also an obsessive preoccupation on the apocalyptic catastrophe. Yanobe currently lives and works in Osaka.
