Born 1941, Kanagawa, Japan. The creator of the most inspirational sci-fi animation, Gundam Universe in 1979, Tomino redefined the super-robot genre, transforming the prior genre into the real robot genre. Before acquiring international recognition, Tomino first began his career in 1963 with Osamu Tezuka’s production, Mushi Productions, where he scripted the storyboards and screenplay Astro Boy. His first film as the director was with the 1971 Wandering Sun. Since, he has written and/or directed animation films annually, until his most recent work Japan Sinks (2006) he appears as an actor playing a character in the film. He has won many awards including the Best Director award at the 2006 Tokyo International Anime Fair for the 2005 film Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: Heirs to the Stars. Tomino currently lives and works in Tokyo.
