Born 1958, Iwate, Japan. Hatakeyama’s focus of his photographs lies in the harsh dichotomy the contemporary metropolis possess; between the ordered and hygienic versus the corrupt and polluted. The River Series (1993-96) made him famous overnight. Employing a diptych-like composition, Hatakeyama’s photographs at first deceives the viewer into believing that the photograph is one continuous scene; a beautiful shot of a nightscape or canal. However, once the antipodal images are realized, the viewer instantaneously relates to the message Hatakeyama is forcing upon him/her. This notion is continuation of his Lime Works (1991-94) to his Underground (2000) series. Many of his works has been published as photographic collections, some of which have presented him with an award. For instance, he was awarded with the 42nd Mainichi Arts Award in 2000. Furthermore, international recognition has been given to him since his participation in the 49th Venice Biennale of 2001. Hatakeyama currently lives and works in Tokyo.
