Born 1959, Hirosaki, Japan. Nara is considered one of the most essential contemporary pop artist of Japan, whose works are exhibited in galleries and exhibitions of an international scale. Evident influences from Japanses manga and comics can be traced in his works; innocent-looking infant girls and pet-like animals with smooth pastel colored,cartoonish lines or surfaces. However, he incorporates a taste of cynicism in them and subverts their childlikeness by depicting them embracing weapons such as knives and guns. In addition, their wide eyes, often seen to hold accusatory looks, provokes adult audiences to view them as the aggressors. In contrast to this reaction on part of the adults, Nara does not intend to for his figures to be so. They are merely children, holding toy-like weapons, so they can not be the aggressors. In this light, the position is reversed, provoking the awareness of adults who surround them as the sinned, holding even bigger weapons. Nara currently lives and works in Tokyo and Tochigi.
